Whether a criminal record is going to affect child custody really depends upon what the charge was for and if there was a conviction.  For example, if it was for an incident that happened ten years before you had children and there's been no reoccurring pattern then there's no reason for any further concern.  But if you get a DUI, while you have a temporary parenting plan, absolutely that's going to impact how much time and under what conditions you're going to be able to spend time with your children.
