Infidelity in a Washington Marriage Is a Common Reason for Divorce, but Could Facebook Use Cause Infidelity?
A new study published in the journal Cyberpsychology, Behavior, and Social Networking found that excessive use of Facebook could lead to problems in a marriage. More specifically, the study found Facebook can make it easy for users to reconnect with previous partners which could lead to an increase in infidelity and divorce.
Some experts believe that reconnecting with previous partners isn’t the only problem. Reconnecting with old friends, or making new ones via social networking sites, can allegedly lead to similar problems. Even something as simple as a photo posted on Facebook could lead to jealously and tension in a marriage, according to at least one psychologist and relationship expert. The time spent on social networking—instead of with one’s partner—can be a further cause of marital stress.
What Can Be Done About it?
Professionals suggest that all couples who use Facebook have honest conversations about expectations and that each partner think about how he or she would feel if the other partner was communicating with a former lover.
