According to the Seattle Times, 39-year-old Dr. Louis Chen and 29-year-old Eric Cooper began dating over a decade ago after Chen immigrated from Taiwan and while Cooper was still in high school. In 2009, the couple had a child through surrogacy, Cooper Chen.
Friends and family have told authorities that the First Hill couple had relationship issues and that Chen was often controlling and bossy toward his partner. In the past few months, those who knew the couple said that they had decided to stop living together, end their relationship, and split the custody of their toddler son.
Last week, a representative from Chen's medical center went to the penthouse apartment to check on the man, who was supposed to start a new job in September. Chen answered the door naked and covered in blood. He admitted to stabbing his partner over 100 times and to stabbing his child. He was also injured in the domestic violence incident, though it is unclear how or why.
