You may have heard that social networking sites like Twitter, MySpace, and Facebook have been problems for those seeking jobs or applying to schools – but did you know that revealing too much information on the internet could be harmful to your divorce case or child custody case in Washington State?

As even middle-aged computer users are becoming social networking-savvy, divorce lawyers and child custody lawyers are looking for more evidence on the internet when it comes to court. Even one status update, “Tweet,” or uploaded picture could spell trouble. A social networking site could prove that a partner was cheating, that a partner has been using alcohol or drugs, or that a partner did not provide appropriate care for a child.

What is the main lesson for those involved in a divorce or child custody case that spend time on the internet? Check all of your privacy settings – or better yet, find a less public way to share your life with others.
