In the United States, many people associate divorce with bouts of depression, anxiety, and general unhappiness. But a new study conducted by Vikram Patel at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine has found that in some countries divorce may help depressed, anxious, and abused women escape unhappy marriages and avoid suicide.

Divorce is becoming an easier, more acceptable way to escape a bad marriage

The divorce study, published this month in the journal Lancet, found that suicide rates drop significantly for women who divorce in India and China – two countries where young married women are far more likely to take their own lives than young men. In fact, according to the World Health Organization, almost half of all suicides took place in those two countries alone.

In India, the top causes of suicide among women are depression, domestic violence, social conflict, and marital conflict. Researchers believe that as women become more educated and divorce becomes a more accessible and acceptable option, many women in bad marriages are choosing to escape through a legal process instead of committing suicide.
