You can’t judge a book by its cover, but the hard truth is that you will be judged on how you look at your divorce trial. You are, after all, literally being judged. Even if the judge in your case does not make decisions based on your appearance, it is naïve to think that what you are wearing won’t have an affect on your case or how you are viewed.

Here are a few quick tips on what to wear to the courtroom for your Washington divorce trial:

  • Dress professionally. Do not dress casually in shorts or a t-shirt, wear clean, well-fitting clothes that would be accepted in a business environment. Don’t wear anything with holes, anything too flashy, or anything overly sexy or revealing.
  • Dress comfortably. While it is important to look professional, you should also be sure that you are not feeling any more uncomfortable than you have to. Avoid painful shoes, tight-fitting outfits, or anything else that could distract you during the trial.
  • Don’t overdo it. Especially if you are seeking spousal support or child support, but even in other instances, it is best to avoid looking rich or flashy. Don’t wear too much jewelry or wear trendy designer clothing.
  • Remember hygiene. It’s not just how you dress; it’s how you look. Take a shower, comb your hair, shave or put on simple make-up.
  • Remember that your appearance shouldn’t be distracting. You do not want to draw attention to your appearance. Avoid big or fancy hairdos, too many accessories, bright colors, dramatic make-up, and hats. Take out odd piercings and cover up tattoos if possible.
