When your adult child announces a divorce, it can be very difficult to know how involved to get, what actions to take, and how to successfully navigate the situation while showing your love and support. It can be easier to continue being a wonderful grandparent to your children’s kids. Here are five tips:

  • Spend time with your grandchildren. This is a time when your grandchildren need to feel love, consistency, and support – and you can help. Whether you drop by the house or offer your babysitting services, simply being around your grandchildren can help them during this tough transition.
  • Never badmouth the other parent. You have probably “taken sides” during the divorce since one of the parties is your child and the other is not. However, it is almost always inappropriate to share your feelings or opinions with your grandchildren. Let them know that both of their parents love them and that some relationships simply don’t work out.
  • Be a good listener. It can be hard to know exactly what to say to your grandchildren, but it can be much easier to listen. Don’t avoid talking about the divorce, instead encourage open conversation. Realize that your grandkids may be comfortable telling you things that they aren’t comfortable sharing with their parents.
  • Report back to the parents. Let your child know if your grandkids have voiced any concerns or if they have displayed any behavior that might need to be addressed. Avoid judging criticizing your child, but make your child aware of any issues that need to be addressed.

Remember: you can never go wrong by simply displaying your love and support for your whole family.
