Although younger couples in America are staying married longer, the divorce rate in the United States remains high. Who is keeping the number up? A new study conducted by Bowling Green State University has found that Baby Boomers – couples over the age of 50 – are divorcing at record rates.

Understanding the Baby Boomer Divorce

The new divorce study found that the divorce rate among couples over 50 has doubled in just two decades. While ten percent of couples who divorced in 1990 were over 50, today, 25 percent of couples who divorce are from the Baby Boomer generation.

Why are people getting divorced later in life – and after decades of marriage?

  • Since Americans are living longer lives, many older couples know that they can divorce in their 50s and still have time to start a fresh chapter.
  • For couples who are marrying for the second or third time, marriages are 2.5 times more likely to end in divorce – especially when the couple is over 50.
  • Baby Boomers may have recently seen their last child leave the house – making it easier for them to divorce without directly affecting their kids.
  • Baby Boomers may be having a changing view of marriage as they age – one that allows them to amicably separate from their spouse and happily begin a new life.
