October 19 has been declared the first National Period Day to recognize the role of Menstrual Health in all women and to reduce stigma by encouraging everyone to openly discuss menstruation as a normal part of every girl’s life.  The national non-profit, PERIOD, is organizing rallies in every state as a kick-off to a year long campaign to increase awareness of period poverty, and to promote governmental and corporate policies which will help eliminate period poverty. The two key policy changes promoted by the campaign is action to provide freely accessible period products in schools, shelters, and prisons, and to pass legislation in every state to eliminate taxes on menstrual products.  The campaign also includes a national collection drive for period products and lobby days in early 2020.

PERIOD Mission Statement For This Year’s Rally

It’s 2019, and yet, 35 U.S. States still have a sales tax on period products considering them non-essential items. 1 in 4 women struggle to afford period products due to a lack of income. In the first city-wide study on period poverty, it was found that 46% of low-income women had to choose between a meal and period products. Because of the period stigma that makes menstruation a taboo topic, we don’t often think about what it’s like for a homeless or low-income menstruator to get their period, and don’t have open conversations about period health or solutions to period poverty.

PERIOD has registered over 400 chapters in all 50 US states and over 30 countries. The local chapters are organized at colleges and high schools, and serves to bring PERIOD’s mission to life in local communities by serving menstruators in need, running educational workshops and starting conversations about periods and period poverty, and fighting for systemic change towards menstrual equity. To take action on National Period Day you can either join a local rally or sign the petition on the Period.org website. The local rally in Seattle will be held on Oct. 19, 2019 from 12 PM to 3 PM at Cal Anderson Park, hosted by Period. Inc. More details can be found on their Facebook page.  If you can’t join the rally, then it only takes a minute to sign the petition on the Period.org website, which will hopefully inspire action by our policy makers.
