Seattle Website: Divorce Inquiries Jump On Valentine’s Day

Posted on Mar 11, 2011

According to a Seattle-based website that fields inquiring regarding divorce, Valentine’s day isn’t just for lovebirds – it’s also a popular time for couples to discuss divorce and look into the legal aspects of the divorce process.

The New York Post spoke to a website's representitive, which said that it sees a 40 percent increase in requests for divorce lawyers around February 14. At the same time, questions regarding the legal ins and outs of divorce increase by one-third.

What are the reasons for the Valentine’s Day increase? Family law attorneys believe there are several reasons that a couple may look into divorce in mid-February. In some cases, a couple may have been waiting out the winter holidays, like Christmas and Thanksgiving, which often involves family obligations and general full schedules. In other cases, people in unhappy marriages might be finally getting to their New Year’s resolution of ending an unhealthy relationship and moving on. In addition, tax season may also have an effect on the increased numbers – some couples wait for their tax refund check before taking the final step of getting a divorce lawyer.

Of course, some people may be affected by Valentine’s Day itself. Seeing so many confessions of love and so much romantic gift-giving can be difficult when you are not in a satisfying relationship, and seeing people celebrating their healthy relationships all around you may remind you that there could be a better life for you. Others may explore the idea of divorce after another Valentine’s Day in which their partner didn’t show their love or make an effort.
