Gamer Couple Fights Over Virtual Assets In Divorce

When considering divorce, most people will worry about the fate of their assets: from who gets the house to who gets the boat to who gets the retirement account. However, for one divorcing couple in China, the court battle revolved around the virtual assets that accumulated online during their relationship.

According to TIME Magazine, a couple in Beiking who played online games for fun during their marriage faced a unique fight during their divorce proceedings: who gets the virtual property that they both helped collect? In the increasingly popular world of online gaming, these virtual assets can have real value. Virtual assets, from fake money to fake resources, can be sold to other gamers.

In this case, the judge sided with the husband, whose name was on the accounts and who had the accounts before the relationship began. The wife? As far as video game points, she will be left with “virtually” nothing.
