New Year, Time For A Divorce?

According to divorce attorneys and relationship experts, this month will show a significant increase in divorce filings – and for a number of different reasons.

First, many divorce lawyers note that the holidays can be a tough time for those who aren’t in a happy marriage: Thanksgiving through Christmas means financial stress, more time with your spouse, family obligations, and time away from your job. In addition, the New Year means that many families will file their taxes and perhaps receive a refund: money that can be used for the divorce. Also, with an improving economy and better job market, many people across the country will finally be confident enough to forge out on their own in the wake of the recession.

Relationship experts add that January is also a popular month for ending relationships because it’s the beginning of the year: a time for resolutions and fresh starts. In some cases, those who are unhappily married will simply decide that they do not want to spend another year in an unrewarding relationship.
