In the aftermath of Chris Brown's tirade at the Good Morning America studios following his interview with Robin Roberts, the question arises, can domestic violence batterers ever be cured of their anger, control, and violence? Chris Brown viciously beat up his girlfriend, pop sensation Rihanna, two years ago after a Grammy party. He was sentenced to five years probation, anger management, domestic violence classes and over a thousand hours of labor-based community service. Brown's music career took a significant hit and the interview with Roberts marked the release of his new CD. So one would assume that Brown would want to show how he had "changed" and moved away from his bad behavior. Yet, in a recent interview prior to the GMA incident Brown stated that: "I just let off, like steam in the back... I just had to release the anger that I had inside me." So even after anger management, domestic violence classes and over a thousand hours of labor, Brown's mode of "letting off steam" is to scream, rip his clothes, and throw a chair at a window, smashing it to pieces. It appears he may not be "cured." Indeed, the statistics show that at least 30% of the offenders, particularly the most at risk for lethal violence, are not amenable to treatment. Chris Brown may fall in this group - only time and potential future victims will tell.
