Washington Huskies wide receiver Jordan Polk was asked to leave the University of Washington’s football team after being charged with a domestic violence crime in Seattle that involved breaking and entering and property damage.
According to the Seattle Times, Polk, a 21-year-old junior who has played as a wide receiver, punter, and kick returner, has been charged with a misdemeanor that could be punishable by up to a year in prison.
The domestic violence incident took place in February, when Polk learned that his ex-girlfriend was celebrating her 21st birthday with a new love interest. Polk first called the woman repeatedly and then broke into her home and beat down the door to her bedroom, where she was sleeping.
The University of Washington released a statement saying that Polk and the team’s coaches agreed that it would be best for him not to return next year, and that he needed a “fresh start” elsewhere. The head coach said that the decision to take Polk off of the team was not entirely based on the domestic violence charges.
Polk is the third Washington Husky athlete to be charged with a serious crime in the last year – one player was suspended while the other was suspended until the NCAA basketball tournament. During his football career at the University of Washington, Polk caught 19 balls for 191 yards and was being considered for a more regular spot as a wide receiver for his senior year.
