Divorce is a difficult process, and even when it is the right decision for you and your family, it could still come with some regret. Recently, the London law practice Seddons surveyed 867 people in the United Kingdom that had recently experienced a divorce. Respondents were questioned about what they wished they could take back about their experience, and what negative effects came with ending their marriage.

According to the study, the three biggest regrets were:

  • The affect that the divorce had on their children – 33 percent
  • The affect the divorce had on their financial situation – 25 percent
  • The way that the divorce was carried out – 21 percent

The survey participants were asked a number of follow up questions about how their divorce affected the children. More than one out of three said that the divorce had affected their kids’ emotional states, while one out of five said that the divorce had affected their performance in school. However, one out of four said that the divorce did not have an overall impact on their kids, while almost one out of ten said that divorce had a positive impact on their children.

What can we learn from this study? As other research has shown, divorce can be a better choice than an unhealthy marriage when it comes to your kids, but it is important to communicate with them and make sure that they are adjusting well. The study also tells us that many couples regret their negative or acrimonious divorce after the fact – information that could help currently divorcing couples pick a more cooperative and understanding approach.
