During a meeting late last month, the Federal Way City Council discussed local domestic violence statistics, shared Washington State domestic violence resources, and proclaimed that Federal Way would observe Domestic Violence Awareness Month each October.
The city council shared a few facts collected by Federal Way Police that might be shocking to those not familiar with domestic abuse statistics: there were 2,000 domestic violence calls in Federal Way last year alone, and Washington State reports over 50,000 family violence calls a year. Still, experts say that only about 30 percent of domestic disturbances are ever reported.
The city council also heard from the Federal Way Domestic Violence Task Force, who reported that the city's new law criminalizing domestic violence in front of children was a solid step toward reducing and controlling domestic violence in city limits. In addition, the task force is involved in prevention programs, educational programs, and awareness programs throughout Federal Way.
The meeting also stressed the number of local, state, and national resources for those who may currently be involved in a domestic abuse situation as well as those who are struggling to heal after leaving an abusive relationship. The Washington State Domestic Violence Hotline is free: (800) 562-6025.
