A man involved in a domestic violence dispute shot and killed himself when confronted with police last week. According to the Seattle Times, the 35-year-old man had seriously injured his ex-wife before driving off in his car.
The Lakewood Police Department was called at about 10 p.m. regarding a domestic dispute between a 37-year-old woman and her partner. Police later learned that the couple had recently finalized a divorce and were still struggling with their relationship.
The police arrived at the scene of the domestic violence incident to find that the man had driven off in the car, leaving his badly hurt wife at the home. When he called the women, she allowed the police to talk to him. He returned to the home and parked in the street.
Moments later, a shot was fired inside the car. Police believe that the man shot himself. However, when movements were seen inside the car after the gunshot, police fired several shots into the car. An investigation is expected to reveal if the man did indeed take his own life or whether he was killed by an officer’s bullet. The officer that shot into the car is on paid leave during the investigation.
Police had been called to the home four times in the last year for domestic abuse-related reasons. The woman had a no-contact order that had been dismissed in September.
The woman was taken to a hospital for medical attention, while three children in the home were taken to a safe place.
