Could “Divorce Tourism” And Mediation Vacations Catch On?

There’s a new trend in India, and it’s designed to save marriages. Starting in 2009, Vijesh Thakkar began offering couples a “divorce tourism” package that combines a relaxing week at a resort with the help of a marriage counselor. Thakkar hopes that this combination of a romantic vacation and a helpful mediator could help couples better consider their thoughts of divorce and work on their relationships.

Couples that agree to the trips – which one can guess are expensive – find that putting aside an entire week to focus on their spouse is enlightening, while having a counselor with you throughout your trip is more helpful than weekly or monthly one-hour sessions at home. While some couples are able to rekindle feelings and gain awareness, other couples discover that divorce might be the right choice for their situation.

Will divorce tourism catch on in the United States? We will have to wait and see.
