Emotional abuse is violence too It can be tough to see and understand a relationship clearly if you are on the inside of the relationship looking out. What you experience with your spouse or partner everyday becomes commonplace even if it is unhealthy and abusive, making it difficult for you to plainly understand that you are not being treated in an acceptable manner.

Recognizing When You're in an Abusive Relationship

Below is a checklist of thoughts and feelings that you may be having if you are trapped in an abuse relationship or have been the victim of domestic violence:

  • Do you feel humiliated by your partner?
  • Do you fear being around your partner or become relieved when he or she leaves the house?
  • Do you try to hide your partner’s behavior from friends and family?
  • Do you find yourself staying away from topics that can set your partner off?
  • Do you feel that you can’t do anything right in your partner’s eyes?
  • Do you often feel trapped in your relationship or helpless to make a change?
  • Do you feel unable to go places or see people without letting your partner know?
  • Do you sometimes feel that you deserve the poor treatment you receive?
  • Have you become emotionally numb or broken?
  • Do you find yourself blaming yourself or your children for your partner’s behavior?
