Just weeks after Seattle attorney Danford Grant was arrested in connection with a string of sexual assaults, his wife has filed for a legal separation in Snohomish County. Jennifer Grant, who is also a lawyer, works in the Seattle City Attorney's Office. Since the case began, her work responsibilities have changed in order to separate her from the case.
Danford Grant, a business litigator, was arrested in late September and charged with seven felonies, including four counts of first-degree rape. His alleged attacks occurred in Seattle, Bellevue, and Shoreline over the summer and fall – all involving Asian massage therapists. At least one woman says she was held at knifepoint. He is also facing charges of second-degree rape and burglary.
The Grants were married in King County twelve years ago and have two young children, an eight-year-old girl and a five-year-old boy. Danford also has a 16-year-old boy from a previous relationship. Jennifer Grant has requested child support and assistance with the division of property, but not spousal support.
Jennifer has shown support for her husband by being present at his court appearance and by writing a declaration in support of a bail reduction in October. Danford is currently on electronic home-based detention after paying a $1 million bail. Recently, his psychiatrist left the case, saying that she did not feel comfortable continuing with the case.
According to the papers detailing the legal separation, Jennifer has not been living with Danford since the day after his arrest in September. Danford Grant joined the petition for legal separation. It is not yet clear whether either party will seek a divorce in the wake of the legal separation.
