Molly Kenny, a Seattle divorce attorney, was recently featured in a segment on KCPQ Fox 13 in Seattle that shows how attorneys can use opposing parties' Facebook status updates, photos, and other updates in divorce cases.
According to the segment, a national survey shows that 4 out of 5 divorce attorneys have seen a significant spike in social media site updates being used as evidence in divorce cases.
Facebook.com is a "gold mine of information", and cheaper and more effective than hiring a private investigator, according to Kenny.
Molly goes on to explain that many inidividuals in Seattle divorce cases who are trying to convince a judge that they are not mentally or financially stable enough to take care of themselves or their siblings can hurt their credibility by posting updates on Facebook (specifically) that contradict their statements.
"Spouses may tell a judge about being depressed, but then contradict themselves by posting pictures of themselves at a wild party. Or let's say you don't have enough money to support yourself or your child, and then you have pictures of yourself on a two-week trip to Hawaii? Something's a miss there."
The segment went on to explain that, while Seattle is a no-fault state that allows residents to divorce without reason, Facebook evidence does come into play when trying to prove someone's mental or financial state of being.
