Top Ten Divorce Study Findings for 2011

Why does divorce happen, what can we do to prevent divorce, and what are the long-term effects of divorce on a family? While there are certainly not clear-cut answers to any of these questions, researchers across the world have been conducting studies and analyzing data to bring us closer to understanding.

This year, a number of fascinating reports on divorce shed light on a number of issues and questions, including what kind of people are susceptible to divorce, what actions might lead to divorce, and what affects divorce has on our bodies and minds. Although some studies simply told us more about what we have already discovered, such as the parents of twins will experience stress that could hurt their marriage, other studies revealed information that is borderline baffling (the happier your childhood, the more likely you are to divorce in the future).

Here are ten discoveries about divorce that made headlines this year:

  1. Happy children are more likely to divorce later in life.
  2. Divorce can cause hair loss in women.
  3. Unemployed men are more likely to ask for divorce.
  4. Women who become sexually active early in life are more prone to divorce.
  5. Couples using government assistance are more likely to divorce.
  6. Many divorced women had marriage doubts on their wedding day.
  7. More children are living apart from their fathers.
  8. Cohabitation without marriage could harm kids in some cases.
  9. Parents of multiples are more likely to divorce.
  10. The public believes that there is a bias toward mothers in child custody cases.
