Approximately, 85 percent of domestic abuse victims are women according to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence. That is an important statistic and one that should not be overlooked. Women who are victims of domestic abuse in Seattle, or anywhere else, deserve help. However, so do the other 15 percent of domestic abuse victims who are men—they should not be forgotten. They, too, deserve help.

What About the Men?

A recent study published in the March 2014 journal PLOS ONE found that domestic abuse is a significant problem for some men. More specifically, researchers looked at the effect of domestic abuse on men who have sex with men. Forty-eight percent of the men who have sex with men, whose records were part of the study, had been victims of domestic abuse. Some of the consequences of domestic abuse for these men included an increased likelihood of:

  • Alcoholism and drug abuse
  • Symptoms of depression
  • Developing HIV
  • Engaging in unprotected sexual activity

Of course, each Seattle domestic violence victim, regardless of sex or sexual preference, should be treated as an individual.
