Myth: If I hire an attorney it will just make things worse by creating conflict.  Attorneys will charge me an arm and a leg for something I can do on my own. Besides the courts have pleadings I can use myself.

Truth: While the courts do have forms you can use a lot of the language in them can be confusing. And do you really want to argue with your spouse more than you have to? An attorney can be a good buffer. An attorney is here to help you, not rack up fees. They have the knowledge to make the divorce process easier on you. Pick an attorney whose style is not to create conflict but to work on solving problems.

Most attorneys will walk you through the process from start to finish.  Even if the both of you agree on how to resolve things, there are always little things that can turn into huge problems. With an attorney on your side, they can do the negotiating for you. A competent attorney understands the court system and knows the laws. Your attorney also has competent staff to assist you.

So, hiring the right lawyer can be a real benefit to reducing your stress, creative problem solving and helping you get the results you want.
